OMG, I’m so happy. I’m a bit of a neat freak (read: obsessive about cleanliness) and by some sort of cosmic joke, moved into a great apartment cursed with ancient Berber carpet in all but the kitchen and bathroom *SIGH*. The carpet was wet when we moved in, so we know some cleaning was done, but it was clearly pretty nasty. We had always planned just spending the money and getting the carpets professionally cleaned, but never wanted to go through the hassle of moving all our furniture.

Enter: Foster Puppy. In an attempt to increase my good ju-ju, we took in a foster puppy (aka Little Itty Bitty Blue Pitty- LIBBP). Oh LIBBP, you are insanely cute, but your inability to hold your urine for any of the 500 trips outside we take every day is causing my dining room carpet to become no-man’s land. Ew.

So husband and I decide carpet cleaning is now an absolute must. We weigh our options: spend $150 and have them professionally cleaned and deal with all the furniture dismantling and moving all the while knowing it will need to be repeated in the not too far future, rent a machine for $30 at the local grocery store, again knowing that this will have to be a common occurrence, or buy our own carpet cleaner. After a bit of research (and knowing that LIBBP is not done making messes), we find the Hoover SteamVac and make the purchase.

Prime membership and $3.99 overnight shipping gets it to us in time to clean up the latest messes. Pretty easy to put together (in fact, did it without the husband), and then we’re off to clean! At first I was a bit disappointed; the ancient stains did not come out of the carpet, but then again, the Hoover can’t be blamed for this; I don’t even think professional cleaners could handle them. However, all LIBBP’s spots are magically removed! And then one giant ancient stain actually did disappear. And the water, OMG the water. It was black. So even if I couldn’t see any improvement, it definitely took a TON of dirt out of these nasty carpets. I con

About Global and Terrorism Networks

Wow, I thought this novel was quite entertaining. Never realized how many people thought it was supposed to be completely true or accurate. It’s just a story.

With a dog and 3 cats (one who gets p***** off easily…pardon the pun)I used my 1st F5914 to its death. I worked it for 3 years on a “over-average” basis. (Almost every weekend for either quick clean ups or tackling a large area.) I re-researched carpet cleaners before replacing it…and the Hoover SteamVac F5914 still won out. I even borrowed friends alternate brands and did not get the results that I have from the Hoover. Once, I had a carpet service come in to clean my entire house, but my carpet was still pretty damp. So for the heck of it I ran my Hoover over the high traffic areas. I pulled up almost as much water as if I had just gone through the “forward motion with power surge”! Never again! This machine is so easy to use and gets up the stains that the “professionals” did not. I had only a few issues with leaking..didn’t have the tank set correctly. I am not a fan of the attachments. I tried to clean my car seats and a mattress, but didn’t get the same suction when it came to pulling out the water as when cleaning carpets. I am not a direction reader, so maybe I did something wrong. I will try again. But I am so glad my new machine is here! It takes very little time to keep your carpet fresh and clean, once you have done the whole thing. (for me anyway) You really will not go wrong if you purchase this machine!

An amazing book! It was recommended by a friend, and so I thought I would read it to see if it would give me any new insights into the age-old questions about the purpose of life etc. I didn’t really know what to expect, but it blew me away! It’s a conversation between an ordinary man called Neale Donald Walsch (with a lot of problems in his life) and God (you may not accept that it’s ‘God’ talking, but then that’s up to you) and it’s written in a very easy to read style. From the first page it had me riveted and I couldn’t put it down. You learn about the importance of trusting your feelings, expressing appreciation, how all human feelings are rooted in either fear or love and that we have been taught to live in fear. As it says in the book ‘precious little is said about the glory of the most loving’, but an awful lot is said in our society about being ‘better’, ’stronger’ and ‘cleverer’ than others. Fear motivates us to be this, because we don’t want to be considered failures. All the big questions are answered: why are we here? Why is there evil in the world? Is there sin? Is there a hell? If so, what is it? Why do things happen as they do? What happens when you die? How can I have successful relationships? Is having a lot of money a bad thing? And inbetween times there’s also humour, because we’re told that God has a great sense of humour!

So many of my questions were answered in a totally new way (going to church or reading the Bible had never given me answers like these) and not only did they make sense to me, they were also liberating! If you’re remotely curious about any of the above questions, then I would encourage you to read this book and decide for yourself whether the answers are for you or not.

I lived in Greenwood, Mississippi from 1974 to 77, when DeLay Beckwith was walking the streets of that town. “Everybody knew” that he had shot Medgar Evers, but since white people were disinclined to testify against him and black people lacked solid evidence, he walked the streets a free man. He just wasn’t invited to the nicest parties any more.

I mention this because of a rather snotty review of this book in the New York times that dismisses Stockett’s rendering of dialect as “outdated” in the inimitable way New Yorkers have of dismissing a great number of things they know nothing about. I have heard that dialect as a living language (I was teaching at a black college near Greenwood), and I know that her ear for the spoken language has perfect pitch. Her eye for social dynamics is similarly acute. The southern response to the law requiring social security be paid to full-time employees, including domestics, was to reduce the number of hours those people worked until they were no longer full-time, while requiring them to keep the house running and the family fed pretty much as they had done at 40 hours (and generally more) per week.

The Help is a novel about the subversive activity of producing a book that tells the truth about how whites treat the blacks, their children, their spouses, and each other as told by those who know them best, their maids. Racism is, of course, rampant to the extent that the white have no tradition of “pas devant les domestiques:” they appear to assume that these black women are too dim to comprehend what is going on. For their part, the black women are fearful of being interviewed by the awkward white woman with literary pretentions, Skeeter Phelan, and it is no wonder: in that society, if word of who spilled the beans gets out, neither the spiller nor her family will get work again if they are lucky. The unlucky are beaten, sometimes fatally.

A turning point in the book is the murder of Medgar Evers, an event that galvanizes
